The landscape artist.

Over a period of ten weeks, from 28th of October in 1969 2.4 kilometres of the shore and cliffs up to 25 metres high in Little Bay, 14.5 kilometers from the center of Sydney were wrapped in light beige erosion-control fabric. The artist, working with a team of 15 professional rock climbers and 110 local art and architecture student workers, as well as Australian artists and teachers to complete the task.

The artist, famous American-Bulgarian artist Christo Javacheff who also known as CHRISTO, the creator of probably most known unprecedented land art installations in the world has died on the 31st of May in 2020.

For the last sixty years Christo created unbelievable gigantic art installations using the land and architecture as his canvas, wrapped everything from vast landscapes to ordinary objects in colourful fabrics.

One of his outstanding works is The Floating Piers in Italy; Christo created a 3-kilometers long bridge made of piers and wrapped in bright orange fabric connecting the bank of Sulzano township and two islands on the Lake Iseo. The piers were 16 meters wide and the fabric pathway continued along 2.5 kilometers into pedestrian streets.

His Australian Project, like all his other projects, was funded by Christo and his wife through the sale of initial drawings and concept paintings. Due to the innovational approach to art, the path from initial design to realization sometimes took years. It was always hard to convince and negotiate with authorities and landowners. However, the art of persuasion let Christo gain a physical form for his projects. Another interesting fact is that he created the Christo company with his belated wife Jeanne-Claude, and to preserve their ideas they decided to fly on different airplanes, so one of them could continue with their legacy. Hence, now despite his death, company can proceed with his next project – wrapping The Arc de Triomphe.

The project of wrapping of the famous monument in Paris was conceived years ago, in 1962, but only now, after his death, it is planned to come to life in 2021.
