DEMOLITION. Architecture and Construction word of the week.
Demolition is PRE-PLANNED and CONTROLED dismantling of a building.
Demolishing of the small buildings, such as single or double storey houses is not very complicated process, however, this is not as simple as swinging a wrecking ball into the building.
Demolishing process involves highly trained experts knowing how to work with construction materials and debris, taking in the account weather conditions and a lot of other factors.
All demolition work must be carried out in accordance with Australian Standard AS 2601-2001: Demolition of Structures.
Preparation for demolition is very essential. If you prefer to organise it yourself then you need to make following steps.
- You need to obtain a demolition permit. This is a must as it will help you to avoid any legal problems as result of the demolition.
- All services and utilities, such as electricity, gas, water will have to be disconnected
- House would need to be inspected for hazardous materials, such as asbestos, which need to be removed by professional asbestos removalists.
- Hire a demolishing contractor who has an appropriate registration and holds a minimum compliant insurance policy
Other way of doing it is to hire a professional demolishing company which will take care of the whole process including necessary permits and preparation.
