CAPITOL

Restoration of Melbourne’s Modern Gem

The gem of Melbourne’s Architecture, CAPITOL THEATRE Designed by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, who also designed the city of Canberra is a real architectural marvel. The theatre that once was one of the most spectacular ‘picture palaces’ in the Southern hemisphere, gradually saw its popularity decline from the 50’s onward, as television and modern multiplex cinemas took over the world of entertainment.

It was purchased by RMIT University in 1999, For years it was mainly used as a lecture theatre and remained closed from 2014.

Today, following two years and $20 million of elaborate restoration and refurbishment the Capitol Theatre has been brought back to life.

Thanks to the state government and private donors pitching in it is now ready for film screenings, festivals, events, conferences and use as a learning space.

This beautiful theatre with 580 comfy seats, state-of-the-art audio and two projection booths with 35mm film and 4K digital capabilities is a great asset to the city.
